This book seeks to examine the role of women in the freedom movement of India, especially from 1885 to 1947 when India got independence. Starting with the formation of Indian National Congress, it describes in detail women's participation in the various movements like agrarian revolt of 1907, agitation against the Rowlett Act and Non- Cooperation movement, along with their involvement in various socio-cultural organizations constituted in the last quarter of the 19th century and early decades of the 20th century. It not only analyzes the role of prominent women leaders like Annie Besant, Sarojini Naidu, Rajkumari Amrita Kaur, Aruna Asaf Ali, Kamala Devi Chattopadhyaya, Sucheta Kriplani, Sister Nivedita, Kasturba Gandhi and Kamala Nehru, but also makes an in-depth study of the contribution of the common women in Indian freedom movement.
