520 _aDue to its cheap extraction cost and abundant availability, large-scale industries demand huge amounts of coal. However, the extraction of coal results in negative externalities for the local communities. Studying the determinants that are responsible for the poor health status reported by the residents living in close proximity to active coal mines of the Talcher Coalfield region, Odisha, our results from data analysis using descriptive statistics and a binary logistic regression model show that age, gender, education and distance from healthcare facilities influence the way respondents report their health status. Policies that protect the locals from the hazardous impacts of mining are the need of the hour.
